Darth Vader knew Padmé was dead, but he had never heard her final words. Years later, his search for the people who had hidden Luke from him led to a recording of the moment he had missed. What he discovered was especially painful: after everything Anakin had done, Padmé still believed there was good in him.
Luke’s Rejection Led Vader Back to Padmé
After Luke refused to join him on Cloud City, Vader went looking for the people who had kept his son’s existence a secret. In Greg Pak and Raffaele Ienco’s Darth Vader (2020) series, that investigation brought him back to Naboo and into contact with Padmé’s former handmaiden, Sabé.
Sabé and Padmé’s other loyal followers wanted answers too. They blamed Vader for the deaths of both Padmé and Anakin Skywalker, unaware that the man they mourned was standing inside the armor.
That made their encounters unusually personal. Vader was surrounded by people who remembered Anakin as someone worth avenging, while he pursued his own anger over the family he had lost.
His investigation eventually brought him to Padmé’s tomb, accompanied by the Imperial forensics droid ZED-6-7. There, a scan uncovered a clue that could take him beyond Palpatine’s account of her death.
A Medical Implant Revealed Where Padmé Had Been Taken
ZED-6-7 detected a medical implant with a traceable stamp. It connected Padmé to Polis Massa, the remote medical outpost where Obi-Wan had taken her after Mustafar.

Vader had been absent from that part of her life. While medical droids tried to help Padmé, Palpatine’s droids were rebuilding him after his defeat by Obi-Wan. When Vader awoke in his armor, the Emperor told him that he had killed her in his anger.
The implant gave him somewhere else to look for answers. Padmé had survived the attack on Mustafar long enough to receive treatment, and evidence of what happened afterward might still exist.
By the time Vader reached Polis Massa, the facility was in ruins. Records connected Padmé’s arrival to Obi-Wan, but the most personal discovery came from the wreckage of a midwife droid.
A Damaged Droid Preserved Her Final Words
ZED-6-7 accessed the damaged midwife droid’s memory and recovered a recording of Padmé near the end of her life.
Vader could finally hear her speaking to Obi-Wan. Even after Anakin had turned against the Jedi, embraced the Sith, and attacked her, she insisted there was “still good in him.”
That belief gives the discovery its weight. Padmé had seen his cruelty herself. On Mustafar, she had tried to reach him while he talked about ruling the galaxy, only for him to accuse her of betrayal and choke her with the Force. Yet she died believing that the person she loved had not disappeared completely.
Vader’s response was violent. During the playback, ZED-6-7 commented on Obi-Wan’s importance to Padmé, and Vader cut the forensics droid in half.
The scene leaves his grief tangled with the same anger and jealousy that had helped destroy their relationship. Hearing Padmé again did not immediately bring Anakin back. He lashed out at the machine delivering the memory.
Why This Discovery Was Different From Learning About Luke
Vader already knew he had a son before this investigation began. In Darth Vader (2015) #6, Boba Fett identified the Rebel pilot who destroyed the Death Star by the name Skywalker, leading Vader to realize that his child had survived.
Polis Massa offered something different. Luke’s existence had given Vader a living connection to Padmé and another reason to resent the Emperor. The recording let him hear Padmé herself, expressing a belief he had spent years trying to bury.
She still thought Anakin could be reached.
That is what makes the moment more than another reminder of her death. Vader went looking for people to blame, but the recording confronted him with how Padmé had seen him at the end. Despite his actions, she had not accepted that he was beyond saving.
Her words also create a painful connection to Return of the Jedi. Luke would later insist that there was still good in his father, carrying the same belief his mother had expressed before she died.
Vader Returned to a Master Who Answered With Pain
Vader’s investigation did not end in redemption. He returned to Coruscant, where Palpatine punished him in Darth Vader (2020) #6.
The Emperor attacked him with Force lightning as Mas Amedda recounted his failures and disobedience, including his unauthorized investigation and his decision to spare Sabé.

Placed after the discovery on Polis Massa, the punishment makes Vader’s situation especially bleak. He had just heard the woman he loved express faith in his remaining goodness. Then he returned to the master who maintained control through fear and suffering.
Padmé’s last words did not make him abandon the Sith. But they give his eventual choice to save Luke another layer: when his son finally reached him, Luke was believing in the same goodness Padmé had never stopped seeing.
