At the end of Return of the Jedi, after watching the Emperor torture his son, Vader could not let it continue. For the first time in decades, he turned against his Sith Master and chose to save Luke.
But in one version of the story, Vader’s redemption is not completely silent.
The Return of the Jedi radio drama adds a short exchange between Vader and Palpatine during that final moment, and it makes Anakin’s return much more direct. Instead of only showing Vader reject the Emperor through action, it lets him say exactly what Palpatine no longer controls.
So what did Darth Vader tell Palpatine before destroying him?
The Movie Version Lets Vader’s Action Say Everything
In the film version of Return of the Jedi, Vader does not answer Palpatine with a big final speech. He says nothing while the Emperor tortures Luke with Force lightning.
Vader just stands there, trapped between the Emperor and his son. Palpatine is laughing, Luke is begging for help, and Vader is forced to choose whether he is still the Emperor’s servant or still Luke’s father.
Then he finally moves. Vader grabs Palpatine, lifts him over his head, and throws him down the reactor shaft. The movie does not need him to explain the choice, because the action already says it. In that moment, Vader rejects Palpatine, saves Luke, and becomes Anakin Skywalker again.
The Radio Drama Gives Vader A Final Answer To Palpatine
In the Return of the Jedi radio drama, the scene goes further than the movie by giving Palpatine and Vader one final exchange.
After Luke refuses to turn, Palpatine attacks him with Force lightning. Luke cries out to Vader for help, just like in the film, but the radio version makes the moment more verbal. As Vader finally turns against him, Palpatine realizes what is happening and tries to command him one last time.
He shouts:
“Vader! I am your master!”
But Vader answers:
“Darth Vader’s master! But not Anakin Skywalker’s!”
Then Vader throws him down the shaft.
