Movie fans were filled with awe the first time Luke Skywalker powered on his lightsaber in Obi-Wan’s cave.
Since then, lightsabers have become legendary weapons equated with grace, finesse, and the thrill of galactic battles.
Also, many questions arose concerning these deft and attractive weapons. For example, how were they first created? What are they made of?
Most importantly, fans wanted to know what powered these majestic weapons.
What force allows a blade to cut through metal yet remain slender and delicate? Even small enough to fit into a narrow metal hilt?

The Power Behind Lightsabers
Of course, lightsabers are powered differently in real life and in the world of science fiction. Here are three ways they are powered.
1. Kyber Crystals
In the Star Wars universe, lightsabers are powered by special kyber crystals found naturally existing on certain planets.
These kyber crystals come in different colors. Most commonly, they’re blue, green, yellow, or orange.
When Jedi Knights are in training, one of their missions is to create their own lightsaber.
To start, they must find a kyber crystal and harvest it from its environment.
Kyber crystals are magical, living beings. It is said that they call to Jedi Knights and ask to be taken.
As the Jedi works on forming his lightsaber with the crystal, he forms a special bond with the crystal.
These kyber crystals are both powerful and beautiful. The blade they power can cut through metal in one stroke.
Their color corresponds to the color of the lightsaber blade itself. Thus Luke Skywalker had a blue kyber crystal and Master Yoda had a green one.
2. Lasers or Plasma
Because of the love Star Wars received from thousands of people worldwide, one question was asked again and again. Is it possible to wield a real lightsaber? If so, what would it be made of?
The answer is although a real-life lightsaber has yet to be produced, some weapons and gadgets come close to what it is. Two of these are lasers and plasma blades.
So if there were a real lightsaber, it would most probably be powered by a laser. Or it would be gas stripped of its electrons.
3. Batteries
Of course, aside from both science fiction and real lightsabers, there are the toy lightsabers we have loved for over 40 years.
What powers these toys and replicas isn’t all that complex. A simple set of AA or AAA batteries will have them blazing with lights and sounds for hours.
What is the Most Powerful Lightsaber in Star Wars?
Lightsabers are powerful. They can cut through bone, steel, and other impenetrable structures. With a single stroke, they can slice and melt anything that stands in their way.
But not all lightsabers are created equal. Naturally, some are more powerful than others.
Here are three that stand out.
1. Darth Maul’s Double-Bladed Lightsaber
Fans were in awe the moment Darth Maul powered up his double-bladed saber. Watching him fight with the two flashing red blades, they certainly were not disappointed.
But Darth Maul’s lightsaber is more than just stunning. It is also one of the most powerful weapons in the Star Wars universe.
Made of four kyber crystals, Darth Maul’s lightsaber is a force to be reckoned with. Making the saber wasn’t easy, either. It is said that Darth Maul spent days next to a blazing furnace in order to create his special weapon.
The more Maul used the weapon, the more it proved its worth. Even when it was sliced in two, Maul was able to use it as a single-bladed weapon! The double-bladed saber really is one that stands out greatly in the Star Wars universe.
2. Kylo Ren’s Crossguarded Saber
Kylo Ren’s lightsaber is unique in its own threatening, sinister way. With its flaming crossguard and crackling, burning sound, we at once know it is not like other sabers.
Ren’s saber is powered by a cracked and reconstructed kyber crystal. Because the crystal was so powerful, Ren had to create vents on either side of his hilt to keep it from overheating.
In the Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, we see the weapon in action. Its cruel force and brutal strength make it stand out as one of the mightiest weapons in Star Wars.
3. Mace Windu’s Purple Lightsaber
Mace Windu’s saber has a unique story behind it. It goes that Windu was unable to form a lightsaber from the usual blue and green kyber crystals the Jedi used. When Windu brought a native of the planet Hurikane back to life, he was awarded a rare purple crystal.
Windu’s lightsaber is a legend, not only because of its rarity and beauty but also because of its power. In Revenge of the Sith, we see Windu wielding it aggressively against the mighty Emperor Palpatine. If not for Anakin’s interference, Windu would have finished off the powerful Dark Lord.
Verdict
Lightsabers are weapons that are formidable forces to reckon with. Their living crystals and the Force flowing from a Jedi into them make battles with these sabers some of the best in television history.
And the good news is we may someday be able to wield our own lightsabers. Although they most likely won’t be powered by kyber crystals, we can be sure they’ll be just as beautiful as real lightsabers.

The darksaber wielded by the mandalorians is definitely the strongest saber in the galaxy.
