Where do Jedi Live?

Where do Jedi Live?

In the original Star Wars movies, the Jedi seem to come and go across the galaxy. They are either hiding from the Empire or engaged in some battle to save the Rebellion. In the prequel movies, the Jedi do have a more fixed home, but they are still on the move quite often and ultimately displaced from that home.

So, it’s hard to tell where exactly the Jedi live. During the era of the Galactic Republic, the Jedi lived in the Jedi Grand Temple. This Jedi Temple was located on the planet of Coruscant. However, After the Great Jedi Purge, the remaining Jedi went into hiding in multiple locations across the galaxy.

Where do the Jedi Live? Do the Jedi have Apartments?

Who Built the Jedi Temple on Coruscant - Explain Star Wars

The Jedi Order originally lived in the Temple on Coruscant. The Jedi Temple goes back to 5000 BBY (or before the Battle of Yavin). This means that the Jedi started living there around 5,000 years before Order 66, which was issued at the end of the Clone Wars to wipe out the Jedi.

Before the Jedi were mostly eliminated, they lived at Coruscant. Most  Jedi lived in dormitories, but some of the living areas seemed more like apartments.

The Jedi lived in the main dormitory at the Jedi Temple. This dormitory area has several sections to it. It contains nurseries for the younglings, dormitories for Padawans, and chambers for the Jedi Masters.

Another section of this dormitory is called the Knights’ Billet and has multiple private areas for sleeping. The Knights’ Billet is essentially a larger dormitory with a snack area and dojo for younger Jedi knight training.

As the Jedi Knights progress in their training, they move into their private chambers. These rooms have closets and bookcases. The chambers of Jedi Masters have these amenities too, along with a couch and a table with chairs.

These Jedi Master rooms resemble more of an apartment. So do some of the living arrangements after the fall of the Jedi Order.

Where Else do the Jedi Live?

Yoda hiding at the swamp-planet Dagobah

Grand Master Yoda went into hiding at the swamp-planet Dagobah. Here Yoda aimed to conceal himself from the Imperial forces while he waited for the right person–a.k.a. Luke Skywalker–to bring back the Jedi Order.

Yoda secluded himself in a hut made from salvaged parts from his escape pod with a mud layering on top. This simple structure resembled a stand-alone home with apartment-like rooms.

Other Jedi have lived on the sand-desert planet of Tatooine. This was the original home of both Anakin and Luke Skywalker. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace captures Anakin living at first with his mother Shmi Skywalker as slaves in the city of Mos Espa.

In Episode IV: A New Hope, we see Luke Skywalker living in a dome-shaped home. This was the home of his aunt and uncle and was designed to withstand the heat and sands of Tatooine.

In the same movie, we also see Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine. Obi-Wan also lives in a hut dwelling and takes Luke thereafter the latter was assaulted by the Tusken Raiders. This home is situated way out in the rock cliffs.

What do Jedi sleep in?

Most Jedi seem to sleep in their robes

Most Jedi seem to sleep in their robes. These loose-fitting, generally brown garments are comfortable enough for sleep.

Jedi may remove their belts while sleeping. They may also put aside their overtunics. In the case of Anakin Skywalker, he also removed his undertunic for sleep.

Jedi robes do vary with different layering patterns. But all Jedi need to be ready to move quickly. So, the garments that Jedi wear and sleep in are made for both purposes.

Some Jedi may sleep without their clothes, as may be the case with Anakin. Others may exchange their outfit in the morning.

What Planet is Home to the Jedi?

Tython COMPLETE History | 100,000 Years | Jedi Home & Sith Playground

According to some Jedi legends, the planet of Tython was the original home of the Jedi. This planet is located far out in the Deep Core region of the galaxy. Some Jedi scholars indicated that Tython was where the first Jedi temple stood.

The comic Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #40 has Darth Vader return to Tython, indicating it as the home of the Jedi. And other sources specify how Tython was the home of the Je’Daii, a past order of mystics that provided the foundation for the Jedi order.

So, Tython could have been the original home of the Jedi.

Watching the recent television show The Mandalorian would give this impression too. The Mandalorian Din Djarin takes Grogu, or the Child, to Tython. Grogu ends up meditating on the seeing stone on this planet.

However, according to the Star Wars movies and Wookieepeda, Tython was not the planet the Jedi called home. The planet Ahch-To actually earns that title

Ahch-To is a planet mainly composed of water with multiple islands. This island is located in what’s referred to as the Unknown Regions. Ahch-To is where the Jedi Order arose and hence their home planet.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi Ahch-To Scenes Combined

The planet Ahch-To was where Luke Skywalker was hiding in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. We see Luke hiding there at the end of Episode VII: The Force Awakens

More precisely, Luke hid on Temple Island, part of Ahch-To. Since the Jedi Order originated on this planet, Luke went to Temple Island to spend the remainder of his days in exile.

In Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, Luke dies on Temple Island. He had projected his image to save the Resistance in the Battle of Crait. Then, he vanishes on the cliff overlooking the ocean.

The Jedi Across the Galaxy

The Jedi thus live in many locations across the Star Wars galaxy. Originally, they came from Ahch-To. Then, most lived at the Jedi Temple at Coruscant until being scattered to places like Dagobah and Tatooine. Finally, Luke returned to the home planet of the Jedi, completing the full cycle.
