Darth Vader’s Attempt To Meet Young Leia Organa

Darth Vader’s Attempt To Meet Young Leia Organa

Not long after Revenge of the Sith, Darth Vader came dangerously close to young Leia Organa on Alderaan. He did not know she was his daughter, but the situation was still far more dangerous than it looked on the surface. So how did Vader end up so close to Leia that early in the Imperial era, and why was Bail Organa so desperate to keep them apart?

Vader Arrived on Alderaan for Imperial Business

This story comes from Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader, a Legends novel that follows Vader in the early days of the Empire.

Vader comes to Alderaan because of Fang Zar, not because he knows anything about Leia. The chain starts when Mas Amedda tells Sidious that Fang Zar has fled Coruscant and is staying on Alderaan under Bail Organa’s protection. Sidious then decides Fang Zar should remain on Alderaan a little longer and orders that Lord Vader deal with the situation. That is what sends Vader there. His trip is part of the Empire’s response to Bail and Fang Zar, not a search for Leia.

The next step is Sate Pestage’s call to Bail. Pestage asks permission to land and explains that he is only a passenger aboard the Exactor. When Bail presses him for the real reason, Pestage says the explanation should be left to the Emperor’s emissary and then names him: Darth Vader. Bail is shaken by the name, but he keeps his voice calm and grants the shuttle landing coordinates. That scene makes the setup very clear. Vader is arriving as the Emperor’s representative to deal with the political situation on Alderaan.

And once Vader is actually inside the palace, the danger gets even closer. Bail tries to stall by saying it may be better if Vader speaks with Fang Zar in person, but Vader notices a woman in a holoimage and asks who she is. Bail answers that she is his wife, the Queen, and Vader replies, “In the meantime, I would enjoy meeting the Queen.

Bail Organa Knew Exactly How Dangerous That Was

Bail’s fear starts the moment Sate Pestage tells him the Emperor’s emissary is coming to Alderaan and names him: Darth Vader. Bail keeps his composure in front of Pestage, but as soon as the transmission ends, he immediately grabs his comlink and asks where Breha and Leia are. When he learns they are already on their way to join him, he orders his aides to find the Queen at once and make sure she does not leave the residence under any circumstances. That is Bail’s first reaction to hearing Vader is coming. He does not treat it like an ordinary political visit. His first instinct is to keep Leia away from him.

The novel then shows exactly what is going through Bail’s mind. He knows something almost no one else in the galaxy knows: Leia is Anakin Skywalker’s daughter. So as Vader’s arrival gets closer, Bail is not just worried about Imperial pressure or the Fang Zar situation. He starts thinking directly about Leia being in Vader’s presence. He wonders whether Vader might recognize her through the Force, and what would happen if he did. The thought is bad enough that Bail is ready to let Fang Zar go, and even to sacrifice him, if that is what it takes to protect Leia.

Leia Was Kept Out of Vader’s Reach Before They Could Ever Meet

The closest the novel comes to a real meeting happens inside the Alderaanian royal palace. Bail already knows Vader is there, and he is panicking over what that could mean for Leia. The book makes his fear explicit: he thinks about how Leia will soon be in Vader’s presence, wonders whether Vader could recognize her through the Force, and even asks himself what would happen if Vader did. Bail is so afraid of that possibility that he is ready to sacrifice Fang Zar if that is what it takes to keep Leia safe.

Then the scene gets even closer. While Vader is in the palace with Bail, Breha appears by holoprojector holding a crying Leia in her arms. She says she will not be joining them after all because Leia had a disturbing encounter with the trespassers in the residential wing and is too upset to be introduced to company. Bail answers immediately that this is “probably best.” That is the key moment. Leia is right there in the palace, Vader is only a short distance away, and Bail makes sure the introduction never happens.
