Dave Filoni has a reputation for knowing Star Wars better than almost anyone. Across The Clone Wars, Rebels, and beyond, he’s the one people trust to keep the details consistent and the lore intact.
Which is why this moment stands out.
Because during one early recording session, it was Sam Witwer who caught something Filoni missed, and quietly corrected it.
Sam Witwer shared the story during a Clone Wars anniversary panel at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo in 2023, talking about one of his very first recording sessions.
“The first time I showed up to work with these guys I was not playing Maul,” Witwer said. “I was playing almost the prototype that would lead to Maul, which was a character called the Son of Mortis. I was super intimidated because at that point I was already a fan of the show, and I didn’t know what character I was coming in for. And then I learned, ‘Oh yeah, it’s not a big deal, he’s just the Dark Side of the Force, so play that.’”
During the recording of “Overlords,” there was a scene where Anakin speaks to what he believes is his mother, Shmi. In the original version, Anakin says he wants her to meet Padmé.
Witwer noticed something didn’t line up.
“Matt Lanter did this amazing scene with the ghost of Shmi Skywalker. He did this amazing scene of ‘I have a wife, I want you to meet her.’ And everyone is getting so emotionally involved.”
But Witwer raised his hand before the session moved on.
“Well, I don’t know if he would say ‘I would like you to meet her’ because Shmi and Padme met in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace,” Witwer recalled.
“Dave at that point just goes (puts head down). He knew it.”
Ashley Eckstein later backed it up.
“I’ve never seen anyone out-geek Dave Filoni before.”
The line was changed to match the timeline: Anakin now says, “I have a wife. You’ve met her.”
Witwer later said that moment actually helped him connect with Filoni, and there were no hard feelings about it. If anything, it just shows how easy it is for even small details to slip through in a universe as big as Star Wars, even for someone like Dave Filoni.
