Grogu’s Backstory

If you’ve watched the Mandalorian series, you’re undoubtedly familiar with Grogu’s journey alongside Din Djarin.

Grogu, with his appearance notably similar to that of Yoda’s species.

Before his adventures with Din Djarin, a Mandalorian, Grogu’s life was somewhat of a mystery.

Born likely in 41 BBY, the same year as Anakin Skywalker, Grogu was 50 years old when the Mandalorian series began.

By this time, the Empire had fallen, and the Rebel Alliance was striving to restore peace in the galaxy.

The series begins with Din Djarin, also known as Mando. He was once rescued by a group of religious Mandalorians, who trained him to become a skilled bounty hunter.

His life took a significant turn when he accepted a mission to retrieve a mysterious package for the remnants of the Empire.

Upon discovering that the package contained baby Grogu, he made the decision to protect him, preventing the Empire from conducting experiments on him.

Jedi saving Grogu

Following the fall of the Republic, Grogu’s location remained a mystery for some time.

He was later found by a faction of the Galactic Empire, led by Moff Gideon, and was often referred to as ‘the Child’ during this period.

Grogu was eventually saved by Din Djarin, a Mandalorian bounty hunter, and became a foundling.

However, Djarin realized that Grogu needed guidance to comprehend and harness his Force abilities. This realization led Djarin to the challenging decision of seeking a Jedi master who could train Grogu.

After the events of The Mandalorian Season 2, Grogu was taken under the wing of Luke Skywalker for Jedi training.

Luke’s return in the series marked a significant moment, as he had sensed Grogu’s distress call through the Force. He took Grogu to his Jedi Temple on Ossus for training.

Grogu spent a considerable amount of time with Luke, learning about the Force and the ways of the Jedi.

During Grogu’s training, Luke Skywalker employed a Light Side mind-probing technique to help Grogu access his past memories.

This technique enabled Grogu to recall his traumatic experiences during Order 66.

It’s through this Force power that we gain insight into Grogu’s past and his survival during the execution of Order 66.

Why Luke Believes Grogu Should Remember Order 66

Luke and Grogu

Luke Skywalker wanted Grogu to remember his past for several reasons. Understanding Grogu’s needs was crucial for Luke to tailor his training methods to suit Grogu’s unique needs and experiences.

By recalling his past, Grogu could process his experiences and emotions, providing a form of closure.

Showing Grogu the past also meaning Luke wants Grogu to understand how dangerous the galaxy is.

Based on those reason, Luke thinks he can convince Grogu to train to become a Jedi and help Luke restore the Jedi Order.

However, Luke sensed deep within Grogu’s heart that he did desire the path of the Jedi.

Luke then presents Grogu with a significant choice.

After a period of training, Luke places before Grogu two items: Yoda’s lightsaber and a Mandalorian chainmail shirt gifted by Din Djarin.

This decision was meant to determine the course of Grogu’s life – as a Jedi or as a Mandalorian.

Luke’s intention was not to force Grogu into a decision but to allow him to choose his own path. As a Jedi, one must commit to a life of service, not personal happiness.
