Darth Maul hated the Jedi, but he still recognized a worthy opponent. In Star Wars Legends, Plo Koon was one of the Jedi he specifically wanted to fight. The reason says something about both men: behind Plo’s quiet manner was a warrior Maul believed could truly test him.
Maul Named Plo Koon Alongside Mace Windu
The connection comes from Michael Reaves’s Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, set shortly before The Phantom Menace. While reflecting on the challenge he wanted, Maul thought of Plo Koon and Mace Windu as great Jedi warriors worth facing.
That is the clearest reason to say Maul respected Plo: he considered him an opponent who could test his training. For someone as proud of his fighting ability as Maul, choosing a particular Jedi as a potential challenge was a meaningful acknowledgment.
Naming Plo alongside Windu makes that acknowledgment especially interesting. It does not establish that the two Jedi were equally powerful, but it shows that Maul placed both among the opponents he wanted to measure himself against.
This was respect for Plo’s ability, rather than admiration for his beliefs or personality. Maul wanted to defeat the Jedi, and beating an accomplished Master would give him something an easy kill could not: proof of what he could do.

Sidious Had Other Plans for His Apprentice
Maul’s desire for a great duel sits awkwardly beside his actual assignment in Shadow Hunter. The Sith still need to remain hidden, so he cannot simply challenge a Jedi Council member.
When Trade Federation official Hath Monchar disappears with information that could expose Sidious’s plans, Maul is sent to silence him. The mission draws information broker Lorn Pavan and Jedi Padawan Darsha Assant into a deadly pursuit through Coruscant.
The contrast reveals Maul’s frustration. He wants to prove himself against the Order’s celebrated warriors, while Sidious needs him to eliminate witnesses and protect a conspiracy. His skill serves his master’s timetable, regardless of the fights he would choose.
The Plo connection comes from Maul’s thoughts, not a duel between them. What makes the reference revealing is that Plo already has Maul’s attention without needing to cross blades with him.
Plo’s Fight With Ventress Shows Why His Reputation Made Sense
A later Legends story gives a useful example of Plo’s ability under pressure. In In Service of the Republic, he helps lead a Republic mission on Khorm, where Asajj Ventress ambushes his group and triggers an avalanche. Plo survives with a broken left arm.
He continues the mission and later faces Ventress using his right arm. Despite the injury, he holds her off and disarms her of one lightsaber.
When Ventress reaches for a remote detonator to destroy the mine, Plo knocks it away with the Force. Commander Wolffe then shoots and destroys it before she can recover it.
Plo’s strength here is his ability to keep fighting while still paying attention to the larger danger. An injured arm does not stop him from challenging Ventress or recognizing when the detonator matters more than the next lightsaber strike.
The battle happens years after Maul’s assessment, so it illustrates Plo’s toughness rather than explaining how Maul formed his opinion.

Electric Judgment Added Another Side to Plo’s Abilities
Plo also possessed an unusual technique: Electric Judgment, a Force ability that released electrical bolts. Its resemblance to Sith lightning raised obvious questions about its use by a Jedi.
In Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force, Plo uses the ability while confronting the criminal Dreed Pommel, who is holding a young girl hostage on Metellos. The electrical attack disarms and incapacitates him, allowing Plo to rescue her.
Plo later reports the incident to the Jedi Council, explaining that he had remained calm and felt no desire to kill the subdued criminal. The important detail is his control: he uses a dangerous ability to stop a threat without giving in to hatred.
