How Good Is Yoda With A Lightsaber?

How Good Is Yoda With A Lightsaber?

Jedi Grand Master Yoda was an uncontested legend in the Star Wars universe.

He had approximately 900 years to amass all the knowledge and skills he was known for.

During the many centuries that Master Yoda lived through, he certainly bore witness to many changes.

He trained multiple generations of upcoming Jedi in the way of the Force. Additionally, he was around for the changing of the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order.

To that account, Yoda was a part of and survived the Great Jedi Purge

Needless to say, for a certain time Yoda was considered to be one of the most powerful Jedi who ever lived. That was until he was eventually dethroned by Luke Skywalker.

Even so, Master Yoda was still skilled in his own right for far longer than any other Jedi. But how skilled was he exactly? How good was Yoda with a lightsaber?

Keep reading as we do a deep dive into this golden character.

Right off the bat, we can say that Yoda was insanely good with a lightsaber.

How did we get to this conclusion? Well, it’s shown throughout the franchise.

Yoda was considered to be the greatest swordsman of his generation. Obtaining a title like that is no easy feat, but Yoda did it and kept it until his passing.

Even well into his old age, Yoda was still defeating his adversaries with his impressive lightsaber skills.

Now, you may be thinking, why is Yoda such an amazing swordsman?

Setting apart the centuries he had to master the craft, Yoda ironically became quite accustomed to solving his issues with combat.

As controversial as that may seem in regards to the Jedi Code, this method worked wonders for Yoda.

Not only did it solve whatever problem he had, but it allowed him to strengthen his swordsmanship.

Take, for example, when he saved Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi from Count Dooku. Despite the difficulty of this battle and knowing that his opponent would put up a good fight, Yoda still held his own against Dooku.

Of course, Yoda was the victor of this battle.

Why Did Yoda Stop Using A Lightsaber?

As the saying goes, “All good things must come to an end.” Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened in the case of the greatest swordsman the galaxy has ever seen.

As he got up there in age, Yoda knew he could not keep up with the youngins as he used to. His health began to decline and that solidified his decision to give up his lightsaber.

Given those two factors, Yoda was aware that he would die soon. He could no longer duel anyone as his body did not have the strength to keep up. Ergo he no longer had use for a lightsaber.

Should Yoda Use A Lightsaber?

When looking at Yoda in his old age, he was understandably too weak to wield a lightsaber.

However, all the knowledge and skill that he developed was still a part of him.

This begs the question, should Yoda still have used a lightsaber?

Yoda should still have owned a lightsaber, but not necessarily used it. Given that he was hundreds of years old and not in the best of health, Yoda was in no position to use a lightsaber.

Even so, it would still have been great to see him in possession of a lightsaber to perhaps block some blasters and protect himself in some way.

Without it, Yoda was just lying there waiting for the sweet relief of death, which could’ve made him an easy target.

This Jedi Grand Master was once dubbed the most powerful and the undisputed greatest swordsman. Then, in the end, he was reduced to a near helpless state.

It’s quite painful to see and gives the character a less than favorable end.

Who Is The Strongest Jedi With A Lightsaber?

Aside from Grand Master Yoda, there was another Jedi who was considered to be the best lightsaber wielder.

This Jedi is none other than Mace Windu.

Mace Windu was a Jedi Master who deservingly sat on the Jedi High Council. He fought as a Jedi General in the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars.

He was so good that he was appointed to be the head of the Jedi at the onset of the war.

When the Battle of Geonosis was raging, Mace bravely led his army of 212 Jedi into the belly of the beast.

In the end, they emerged victorious as Mace Windu was able to defeat the notorious Jango Fett.

For those who don’t know, Jango Fett was a dedicated Mandalorian bounty hunter.

This feat earned Mace a promotion to High Jedi General and the title of the best lightsaber wielder ever.

Conclusion

There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Yoda was the most powerful Jedi of his time. That was until Luke Skywalker came of age and began to grow in his potential with the Force.

In later years, Luke would be considered the most powerful Jedi in the Star Wars universe. Still, this is mainly in terms of the Force.

When it came to the use of a lightsaber, Luke came nowhere close to the skill Yoda possessed.

Sadly, Yoda’s age caught up to him. With age came a rapidly declining health and only one destination left for the Grand Master–death.

This took the outstanding swordsman out of commission. This was hard for many fans of the green mystical legend to watch as their hero was slowly reduced to nothing.
