Star Wars Is Officially Bringing Back Jyn Erso

Star Wars is bringing Jyn Erso back in a new Rogue One prequel comic, giving the character her first major spotlight in years.

The one-shot is part of Marvel’s Rogue One anniversary celebration and will focus on Jyn before the events of the film, during her time in Imperial captivity on Wobani. That places the story shortly before Cassian Andor and K-2SO break her out at the beginning of Rogue One.

The return is notable because Jyn has had far less attention than Cassian Andor since the film’s release. Cassian went on to receive two seasons of Andor and a new anniversary one-shot of his own, while Jyn’s story has remained mostly tied to Rogue One itself.

Marvel’s New Jyn Erso Comic Expands Her Time on Wobani

Star Wars: Rogue One – Jyn Erso #1 is written by Ethan Sacks, with art by Ramón Rosanas. The one-shot takes place before Rogue One, during Jyn’s time as an Imperial prisoner on Wobani.

That setting is important because Rogue One does not spend much time there. The film introduces Jyn as a prisoner being transported under the name Liana Hallik, then quickly has Cassian Andor and K-2SO break her out for the Rebellion. This comic goes back to the part of her life the movie only used as an opening scene.

The official synopsis describes Jyn as “a prisoner of the Empire” trapped in the toxic Wobani fields. Her routine changes when an unlikely crew asks the infamous slicer “Liana Hallik” to help with an impossible escape. The story also puts Imperial security droids, tower cannons, and incinerators in her path, while asking whether she can keep a frightened young prisoner alive.

That last detail is probably the most important part. Fans already know Jyn survives Wobani, because Rogue One begins with her rescue. The real question is what this escape attempt does to her before Cassian ever arrives.

Rogue One showed Jyn as someone who had learned not to trust causes, leaders, or promises. She had been abandoned by Saw Gerrera, separated from Galen Erso, and forced to survive under different names. But the comic’s synopsis suggests Wobani may add one more piece to that history.

If Jyn helps another prisoner survive, then the story is not just adding another prison adventure. It is showing that Jyn still had the instinct to protect someone before the Rebellion pulled her back into the war.

Ten Years Later, Star Wars Still Has More to Say About Jyn Erso

Rogue One introduced Jyn, Cassian, Chirrut, Baze, Bodhi, and K-2SO, then killed all of them before the credits rolled. Their mission succeeded, but none of them survived Scarif long enough for a sequel.

That left only their pasts open for new stories.

Cassian already received that treatment through Andor. The series showed his life under the Empire, his first steps into rebellion, and the path that led him to the Rebel spy we meet in Rogue One.

Jyn has had less attention. Rebel Rising covered much of her life after Saw Gerrera rescued her and before the main events of Rogue One, but on-screen and in recent Star Wars storytelling, Cassian’s history has been explored far more.

Star Wars: Rogue One – Jyn Erso #1 goes to a much smaller window of time. It returns to Wobani, when Jyn is already living as Liana Hallik and still trapped inside the Imperial prison system.

The comic may only cover one escape attempt, but its synopsis points to something Rogue One did not have time to show: Jyn choosing to protect another prisoner before the Rebellion ever gives her a mission.
